There are already a couple of projects existing that are making use of the Flash Player to bring dynamic audio to the web. All of them are based on different techniques to squeeze dynamic audio out of the player. Varing from serious applications to smaller experiments — there is some huge potential!
You know another audio project or interesting experiment? Leave a comment and we will add it to the list.
Hobnox Audiotool
The Hobnox Audiotool is a state of the art rich internet application aiming to become a professional audio environment written in Flash. It features dynamic audio flow with cable wiring and an infinite desktop allowing you to arrange audio devices the way you like.
Because it is a feature rich application with fullscreen graphics and features like history, copy and paste et cetera the audio is calculated in Flash but streamd via Java to the soundcard to garuantee a stable audio stream and low latency.
The Hobnox Audiotool is currently in a private beta phase but there is a lot of footage on the web already.
Disclosure: André Michelle, Joa Ebert and Kai-Philipp Schöllmann are developing the Hobnox Audiotool.
popforge
popforge is an opensource library started by André Michelle and Joa Ebert. It is the product of several freetime projects combined into one library.
The necessary classes for dynamic audio creation in Flash are also included. You can create a real flash.media.Sound object at runtime or play around with an endless audio stream based on the first well-known audio hack.
popforge is a great start if you are interested in dynamic signal processing or audio programming in general.
8bitboy
The 8bitboy was the first proof-of-concept application for the popforge library. It is a player for all those great vintage Amiga tunes.
MOD files have only four channels and samples are stored in 8bit format. This is why the sound is so characteristic.
LemonAmiga is using the 8bitboy to preview chiptunes online.
The 8bitboy is also opensource.
Splicemusic

Splicemusic.com is a Barcelona based startup with an advanced online sequencer that allows community members to create and remix songs. It features various effects and a whole timeline. Users can upload samples and share them with the rest of the community.
Aviary Roc
New York based Aviary is developing a “Music generator” for their suite of creative tools. We are all excited to see with what they will come up with since the quality of their other applications is already outstanding.
André Michelle’s experiments
André Michelle is showing a lot of his sound studies in his lab. They range from different effects and complex studies to a TR-909 emulation in Flash.
Digimix

Digimix Inc. creates audio editing and mixing applications for the Flash platform. The Digimix engine enables audio processing capabilities traditionally found in desktop apps. It includes real time effects, time stretching, pitch correction, and beat detection. For more info: alan at digimix dot com

WOW! I’ve been preaching the need for more powerful sound handling in Flash for years now. It’s awesome that so many people are onboard.
As a flash programmer/potential professional musician, this is I think the best news I’ve heard in a long time.
You call it a “campaign for enhancing flash audio.” How does one become involved?
I’ve made an MP3 library for retrieving MP3 audio from the local harddrive here.
Using the MP3 parser from this project, we’ve also written a socket based MP3 stream player (Shoutcast/Icecast), a demo of which can be viewed here
Hey, this is Geoff. We recently acquired splicemusic.com and its remixing tool. Do you know any hardcore actionscript developers that can maintain and add onto the site? Here is the candidate description… thanks
you can email me at gdomoracki@gmail.com
Our fully funded music software startup leverages complex actionscript techniques in audio sequencing; and we need a full-time contract-based actionscript all-star with a hardcore programming background. There is very little graphical work in this position. The ideal candidate will have spent time in large web / software projects in team settings and brings experience in a diverse selection of programming languages and models. A computer science degree or equivalent career experience is a plus. The existing application is written in flash 9 and needs to be transitioned to flash 10, taking advantage of new low-level access to the audio buffer. Experience with audio processing, encoding, and mixing is a plus.
Chicago candidates only; no staffing firms.
You may need to relocate to Chicago and buy a lot of music remixes.
Please send your resume and portfolio and optionally, small code samples.
Geoff, when are you re-releasing the splicemusic.com application?
great article thank you.
ı dont know another procted but the list is good. thank you
we have benefited a lot as the best courier companies thanks. nice sharing
hello, thanks for all, i liked this sites.
you can visit us too, good night.
thanks
Thanks for great list, it’s a proof of how powerful flash is.
